Bike trip to North Carolina

A couple of weeks ago my partner Gleen, our friends Liz and Cory and I decided that it would be oh so great to hop on our bikes in warmer climates and really enjoy spring in the outdoors. Well, we ended up at Nantahalla State Park in North Carolina to do a few off-road trails. Of course, being in the car way too long, I felt the urge to hop onto the bicycle shadow to get the body in motion!

Here we are in our gear, just getting ready for our first ride. It was very warm outside and we were introduced to a few hills immediately at the trail head - so a few layers were shed along the way.

Hmmm....have I ever mentioned that I have a huge and irrational fear of snakes??? Well, we were greeted by this one on one of our rides. At first we thought it was a copperhead rattlesnake....but upon further investigation we think it is another species. Any ideas? Let us know how stupid we were to hang out with this reptile for a lot longer than we probably should have.

Art*O*Mat Vending Machines

The genious man, Clark Whittington of North Carolina, USA came up with the concept of turning old cigarette vending machines into art vending machines. Each machine is full of art by various artists who consign their work through a group called Artists in Cellophane. The art in the vending machines change from one location to another......and you only have to insert one artomatic token which costs a mere $5 to receive your very own Artomat treasure. The pieces range from paintings and drawings, to sculpture, textiles, zines and more. From my experience, the treasure is not only the art itself, but the sheer fun of tracking down these fine vending specimens in very random locations. Some of the machines are totally "Pimped Up" while others showcase a more conservative look. You can certainly see many more examples of these at www.artomat.org. Fill your boots....and heck, take a road trip for thousands of kilometres on an Artomat adventure......that's what I did.....oh did I mention I have an obsession???

I like this machine the best out of the three...perhaps it's the colours. The women in the Ashville gallery where the artomat was located were also excited by what I would receive as I popped my token into the artomat.

This one was by far my favourite in terms of the treasure itself. I scored a fabulous pewter cracker by Herbert Hoover. You can view his fine work at www.newworks.com.
